Abstract

The research described in this project aims to analyze common aspects between some works by Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959) and Antônio Carlos Jobim (1927-1994). Initially, the research will focus on the four songs from Suite Floresta do Amazonas (1958) ("Cair da Tarde", "Canção de Amor", "Melodia Sentimental" and "Veleiros") by Heitor Villa-Lobos, a work completed and premiered at the moment when Bossa Nova would emerge, and whose sonority, such as melodic outline, harmony, orchestration, seems to anticipate certain characteristics present in the arrangements, orchestrations and several compositions written by Tom Jobim for the albums "Canção do amor demais" (1958), by Elizeth Cardoso, and "Chega de Saudade" (1959), by João Gilberto, which are considered the starting point of Bossa Nova. Through meticulous analysis of the material and the comparison of the works, we intend that the final results may be used as a basis for the understanding and systematization of the creating processes from the composers and works analyzed in this research. Furthermore, the results can be able to support future researches regarding Brazilian music. (AU)
