Abstract

In the face of an important presence of women in the history of modern Brazilian sculpture and in the Biennials of São Paulo, my PhD research aims to understand how gender dynamics have affected the international recognition and circulation of Brazilian women sculptors (or women sculptors working in Brazil) who were prized at the São Paulo Biennales between 1951 and 1965. This group is made up for: Felícia Leirner, Liuba Wolf, Lygia Clark, Maria Martins, Mary Vieira and Zélia Salgado, who had a remarkable internationalization. A research stays in Paris of about six months in the Ecole Normale Supérieur (ENS), supervised by the professor Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel is planned. The three central objectives are: 1)To look into the Paris Biennials archive hosted in France by the Archives de la Critique d'art on Rennes to compare figures on participation and women's prices with which the data of São Paulo biennials 2)To collect data on the circulation of sculptors (especially Mary Vieira and Lygia Clark) outside Brazil, particularly in Europe 3)to attend the Artl@s seminar and deepen my knowledge on the theoretical and methodological proposals of a spatial and transnational history of art developed
