Abstract

The study of drought episodes over the Sao Paulo state is social and economically important. The understanding of atmospheric patterns associated to these episodes require the use of reanalyses, making it important to investigate how these reanalyses represent the dry periods in comparison to observational data. The objective of this work is to characterize severe drought periods over the Sao Paulo state using a normalized precipitation-evapotranspiration index. The episodes identified will be statistically analyzed. Duration, intensity and tendency of these events will be calculated. Variabilities in high and low frequencies will be investigated. This study will use climatic observed data and also a long term reanalysis, to assess how this reanalysis represent the observed drought events.
