Abstract

We intend, in this research, to analyze the concepts of necessity, liberation and freedom in the work of Hannah Arendt. These concepts are most strikingly evident in The Human Condition (1958), Between Past and Future (1961) and On Revolution (1963). It is necessary, therefore, to go through a few moments of these three works, comparing the specificities of each one's approaches in order to articulate the central aspects of each concept and, especially, the often subtle distinctions that permeate them. Therefore, we will deal mainly with: (I) the relation of these three concepts with the public and private spheres - whose characterization is carried out by the author according to its original meaning in the Greek polis; and (II) the differentiation between the concept of liberation, related to the overcoming of material impediments on the part of an individual, and freedom, a phenomenon that, for the author, is strictly political and can only be experienced within bios politikos.
