Abstract

The enzymes are widely used in industrial processes, especially those of microbial origin, since they present desirable properties for the industrial application. Metagenomics has been used to study the diversity of microorganisms as a strategy for prospecting, enabling access to the collective genome of environmental samples, including non-cultivable microorganisms. The use of enzymes in the process of degradation of lignocellulosic biomass and the promotion of these residues to products of high added-value has potential applicability to several industrial sectors. In this sense, xylanases can be added in saccharification processes, in fruit processing, in paper production and in the production of second generation ethanol. Through the hemicellulose's hydrolysis, the formation of compounds of industrial importance such as xylitol, furfural and xylo-oligosaccharides can also occur. In this sense the present project aims to bioprospect xylanase coding sequences through the sequence-driven strategy, using the metagenomic database of the Laboratory of Biochemistry and Microorganisms and Plants (LBMP), in order to identify a potential candidate for kinetic and functional characterization, capable of degrading lignocellulosic biomass efficiently.
