The present work means to develop the history of the publisher Difusão Europeia do Livro (Difel), founded by Paul Jean Monteil in 1951. Considered a social agent responsible for the accomplishments of the publisher, Monteil's trajectory will be the common thread for this analysis. Between the tradition to spread the European's classics of intellectuality - especially French - and the innovation of publishing Brazilian authors - coming from the university - the research will show how did the bookseller/editor construct a project capable of being economically viable in the editorial market and, at the same time, of being launched as an intellectual renovation pole in Brazil, along with the consolidation of the university system in the country since the 1950s.
