Abstract

This thesis is dedicated to the history of the Livraria Francesa and the publisher Difusão Europeia do Livro (Difel), \'sister companies\' founded by Paul-Jean Monteil in São Paulo, respectively, in 1947 and 1951. The objective of the work will be to discuss the place of the enterprises in the circuits that dynamized the São Paulo book economy, given the process of metropolization experienced by the capital in the mid-twentieth century. At this juncture, we highlight the activities organized around the School of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters of the University of São Paulo (FFLC-USP) and the initiatives of its members to postulate themselves as protagonists of the transformations of this intellectual and urban environment. Considering circulation, the bookstore will consolidate itself as a reference in the dissemination of goods imported from France due to the prestige that the European country held with the local intelligentsia, especially among university students. In addition to consuming the books, this audience will also make it a space for sociability and professional exchanges that will encourage M. Monteil to diversify his investments, addressing editorial production. Thus, he creates Difel and begins his activities with a program of translations of French works that incorporates recent FFCL-USP graduates as translators and proofreaders. Then, as they advance in the stages of their university professionalization, strengthening relations with the bookseller/editor, they become authors of the publisher\'s projects dedicated to discussions about the history and social formation of Brazil. In view of this, we will demonstrate how Difel and the French Bookstore represent the role of the book market in building the means for this academic community to become aware of its identity as a group, and for its members to enable some of the mechanisms that transmit its principles, debates, works and authority as representatives of a new intellectual system, or a way of thought, that is formed around the university (AU)
