Abstract

This research aims at shedding light on the Brazilian production of music-theater, fomenting the discussion about the processes of creation, transformation and unfolding, and with that, to identify the idiomatic characteristics of this genre in Brazil. It is assumed that such genre has been neglected in the historiography of Brazilian music, with few works that consider and propose reflections on this practice, unlike the European context, where there is already a more seditious theoretical corpus, especially in Germany. To undertake this task, we will work with comparative analysis. Firstly, Brazilian music-theater works will be analyzed based on Nicholas Cook's theory of Musical Multimedia (1998) adapted by us (MAGRE, 2017). Next, we will analyze European iconic works, confronted with the characteristics established by Rebstock (2012). For the analysis of the results, we will compare previous analyzes and try to establish similarities and differences between Brazilian and foreign expressions, in order to identify which are characterized as idiomatic of our music-theater and which are of a more global character, recurrent in the genre as a whole. With this research, we will be able to present consistent data on the history of music-theater in Brazil, contributing to Brazilian musicology and promoting dialogues with international studies on the genre.
