In vitro mechanical evaluation by charging compression of biplanar interlocking nail

Abstract

Long-bone fractures represent a significant portion of the veterinarian's routine cases. The treatment consists, basically, of conservative or surgical approaches, which aim to restore damaged tissues and locomotion function. Several orthopedic implants have been used in veterinary medicine. Interlocking nail (ILN) represents an excellent option, however, implant failures have been reported. The present study aims to develop and evaluate a novel system of ILN with threaded locking between screws, the nail and the cortical of the bone, with a hole at an angle of 90 degrees in relation to the others. The system will be compared to the multiplanar models with and without the locking system. The sample will consist of 21 synthetic specimens made by polylactic acid. The specimens will be divided into three groups: standard nail without threads in the holes (Group I), nail with threads in its holes (Group II) and nail with the same characteristics as group II, but with the penultimate hole closest to the distal hole and directed at 90 degrees from the others (Group III). All groups will be submitted to biomechanical compression tests. Locking nails are expected to exhibit greater resistance to the cyclic test, and also in the destructive tests when compared to the conventional model. Additionally, the biplanar nail might show superior resistance when compared to the monoplane one.
