Abstract

The present proposal has as its objective the realization of the Social History of Steam Navigation in the São Francisco River, in the region of Pirapora in the North of Minas Gerais, during the period 1957-1972. The region has undergone great social, economic and environmental transformations by integrating itself with the development projects implemented by the Federal Government. Transformations that began in the administration of Juscelino Kubistchek (1956-1961). However the economic development of the region was not a quiet process, but marked by tensions and resistance and new social configurations. The construction of the Três Marias Dam and the advancement of road transport had a strong impact on the navigation of the São Francisco, which changed radically. As a result, the relationship between river dwellers and the river also changed. It is this transformation that we intend to document and analyze in the present research of Social History. The sources used in the work are works by memorialists, the press, iconographies and official documents.
