Abstract

Oil is one of the most important products for modern society as it is the main source of energy for various industrial sectors. In this way, it has high commercial value and, consequently, high extraction rates. During its productive process, the petroleum industry generates different types of waste. Among them, there is the petroleum produced water, also known as produced water or only petroleum water (PW). This type of waste is the most generated by this segment and constitute a serious environmental problem in terms of waste discard, especially due the complexity of the waste blend. The PW may cause deleterious effects on aquatic biota when discarded without treatment or after ineffective treatment. It may cause irreversible damage to affected ecosystems due to the toxicity of various compounds, such as metals and various organic and inorganic compounds. Therefore, studies on the effects of the PW on the aquatic biota are essential for the preservation of many ecosystems, as well as to the development and standardization of new techniques for PW treatment (since often the conventional treatments used by the industry are not efficient in the removal or reduction of the PW toxicity). Hence, this work proposes an interdisciplinary evaluation (in collaboration with Dr João Pestana from University of Aveiro, Portugal) aiming to evaluate the efficiency of various treatments to reduce the toxicity of water samples produced from crude oil, using the aquatic organisms Chironomus riparius (mosquitos) and Dugesia tigrina (planaria). Acute toxicity tests will be performed to evaluate the mortality, and behavioral tests of locomotion, feeding and regeneration (after decapitation) of planarias exposed to crude and treated samples of PW. In addition, chronic toxicity tests will be performed with Chironomus riparius, according to the norm OECD 218 (with some modifications); to evaluate mortality, growth and development of the mosquitoes exposed to the PW samples.
