Study of the behavior ofndocrine disrupters in water and sediments made by chemical analyzes and ecotoxicological tests: emphasis on the biological recovery

Abstract

Chemical substances with potential to disrupt the endocrine systems of vertebrates and invertebrates have been detected in aquatic environments all over the world in concentrations of ppb (parts per billion). Natural and artificial hormones present in domestic sewage that are introduced in aquatic environments without treatment, or with insufficient treatment, are important elements. Then, the present research aim to evaluate the toxicity of the endocrine disruptors (ED) 17B-estradiol (E2) and 17-a-Etinilestradiol (EE2) in fishes of the species Danio rerio, and in the anfípodes Hyalella azteca in laboratory. They will be exposed during chronic periods in water and in contaminated/formulated sediments. The capacity of aquatic humic substances, activated charcoal, and zeólitas to adsorb these pollutants will be evaluated through chemical analyses in gas chromatographic acoplated to mass spectre (GC-MS). The efficiency of the removal of the ED will be investigated through biological rescue essays, after exposing the same organisms to concentrations obtained after the treatments with the adsorptive materials. In fishes, the parameters to be evaluated will be the histology of the gonads, vitelogenine (through histochemical method using liver of adult males), as well as gonadossomatic and hepatossomatic indexes. In the tests with sediments the chemical behavior of the ED (interface water/sediment) will be evaluated for methodological adjustments to keep the concentration of the sediments constant for toxicological studies, considering parameters such as growth, reproduction, and histology, for both parental and F1 generations of H. azteca. Experiments of biological rescue will be carried out by exposing the organisms during similar periods to sediments free of contaminants, evaluating the same ecotoxicological parameters. These experiments will contribute to detect safe concentrations of the EDs considering the protection of the aquatic life. (AU)
