Abstract

Fiberglass cast is widely used in the correction of soft and bony tissues in equine species, since it promotes adequate immobilization in limbs with skeletal instability and helps in the recover of the animal after internal reduction procedures. This project aims to compare the resistance of equine limb distal immobilization using fiberglass casting (Hygia Cast) with the immobilization associated with transcortical pins. In addition, to recommend, from two different ways of use the transcortical pins, the one with better applicability in view of the resistance of the immobilization. So, forelimbs of adult animals (> 3 years old) who died at the Veterinary Pathology Service of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science of UNESP Botucatu, for reasons not associated with the locomotor system will be collected. The collected pieces will be divided into 3 groups: (G1) immobilization with fiberglass cast; (G2) fiberglass cast + 2 transcortical pins and (G3) fiberglass cast + 3 transcortical pins. After immobilization, the pieces will be submitted to the simulation of the compressive load exerted by the weight of the animal in quadrupedal support, in order to establish the best method of immobilization between the established groups, from the determination of the resistance of them.
