Abstract

Distribution system expansion planning is the stage which the distribution companies design how new consumer units can be supplied according to the existing regulation. This planning takes place by means of determining adequate topology, replacement of conductors, installation of voltage regulators and capacitor banks, construction or resizing of substation and sizing and placement of distributed generations. The energy sector has become more attractive to new investments due to the popularity of distributed generators and energy storage systems, creating a new energy arbitrage market. In this scenario, distribution companies must be ready for new distributed generations and energy storage systems in their systems that were not previously foreseen in their planning. Thus, the concept of hosting capacity of distributed generation is presented as an extension to the traditional planning in order to assist the distribution companies. The problem is formulated as a multi-objective optimization, which aims to improve hosting capacity by reducing investment costs while respecting the constraints of the traditional problem. (AU)
