Abstract

In 2015, failure of a tailing dam in Mariana - Minas Gerais, dumped into Doce River basin tons of iron tailings, reaching the Doce River estuary in the state of Espírito Santo. This has been the biggest environmental disaster in the Brazil's history. The tailings deposited are rich in iron oxides, which has an important role in metal retention in soils. However, iron is susceptible to oxireduction processes in estuarine environments, being controlled by soil parameters such as redox potential, pH and organic carbon. For example, iron reduction can solubilize iron oxides present in the tailings, promoting metal bioavailability and bringing contamination risks. In this context, iron dynamics is one of the main control mechanisms of trace metal bioavailability in the Doce River estuary. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the geochemical behavior of this element and its associated metals after the Samarco mining disaster. (AU)
