Abstract

In post-Cold War era, it is possible to identify the evolution through time from humanitarian interventions to the principle of Responsibility to Protect (R2P). Fundamentally, the rhetorical engineering of this approach was due to the notion of restricting sovereignty in favour of individuals' security; implicating in an evolutionary shift in the understanding of the International Community, leaded by UN's authority, in contexts of conflict escalation. The transformation of how doctrines were constructed and applied was not only a matter of temporal linearity, but as well an expression of the teleology that relativized traditional principles of 'Westphalian' International Law. One of the key drivers of this shift was the idea of international protection on human suffering and the ability of democracies to avert conflict risks. That being, this project intends to investigate the meanings of 'democracy' for triggering UN incursions and its incorporation to protection narratives built since the 90's as an element of legitimacy.
