Abstract

Chagas Disease is a neglected tropical disease caused by the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, with estimates of eight million people infected and more than 10,000 people dying every year. Little is known about the parasite-vector relationship, however, it is considered that this parasite does not present pathogenicity to invertebrate (triatomine) hosts. However, there are studies that report negative effects caused by the infection. In the entomology, the metabolomic techniques have been used basically to reveal information that help in the understanding of the physiology and the behavior of the insects, being the metabolomic studies in triatomines restricted to the analysis of the fecal metabolism of Rhodnius prolixus, Triatoma infestans and Panstrongylus megistus without infection by T. cruzi Based on the need to better understand the parasite-vector relationship of Chagas Disease, the present project aims to evaluate, using metabolomics, the influence that T. cruzi infection can exert on T. infestans, clarifying the metabolic pathways involved in this association.
