Abstract Energy transition and decentralization have been key issues in several countries of the world at a time when there is a need for a more sustainable, safe and energy-saving supply of energy. This study seeks to bring this discussion to the Brazilian environment, revealing as a main focus the positive or negative question of the insertion of natural gas into the energy matrix of the state of São Paulo as a transition element - where there is the greatest network of gas pipelines in the national territory, in addition to a culture and geological extraction potential - so that there is a basis for creating future energy scenarios for an assessment of the geo-economic and environmental aspects that this transition can provide to the state. To do so, the history of the use of this fossil fuel in the different sectors that move the economy of the state will be analyzed, together with the geological discoveries and their impacts on the supply and price of the product from the decade of 1980 until the present day.
