Abstract

Over the last five years, UNICAMP has managed to articulate a complete innovation ecosystem facing the challenges of energy management, energy efficiency and energy transition, that is, the change to an energy matrix based on renewable energies with low or no emission of greenhouse gases. In addition to bringing together companies, researchers, managers, social and multilateral organizations, government agencies, startups, young talents and employees, the projects resulting from this effort brought real applications and gains to the university itself. Through the concept of a living laboratory, the projects carried out are simultaneously impacting infrastructure, teaching, research and extension, with the predominant use of extra budgetary resources. The concrete result of this movement is a reduction of more than 10% in energy consumption at the university, either through the offer of renewable energy or through energy efficiency efforts. Currently, this process is institutionalized in the university, through the creation of the Office of Sustainable Campus Special Projects, it has already gone through two management changes, interacting with three different management groups at the university, and consolidating itself as a State and not a Government program, guaranteeing thus the continuity of efforts. The proposal to create CPTEn - São Paulo Center for the Study of Energy Transition, offers the State of São Paulo, with the support of FAPESP, an opportunity to transfer UNICAMP's successful experience to the treatment of urgent problems in São Paulo society regarding the issue of energy transition. The State can and must seek greater efficiency and management of its own energy consumption, it must take a leading role in the debate and actions in pursuit of energy transition, and it must lead the country in search of advances in scientific and technological knowledge aimed at our own problems and challenges. As a starting point, UNICAMP offers the talent of its students, researchers and employees, and articulates with its main partners so that CPTEn can start its operations with strong start-up capital in terms of infrastructure, human resources and financial resources. The scientific challenges proposed for CPTEn comprise a holistic view of the energy transition. It is intended to build platforms for continuous and permanent diagnosis of energy use in public buildings through the collection and analysis of data and the use of artificial intelligence. Regulatory innovation is sought to make public and private financing viable and to make partnerships more flexible. The ambition is to innovate in the proposition of public policies inducing energy transition. It is based on economic analysis and prospective scenarios to explore different paths for the desired transition. It imposes that education is the key to the formation of transforming agents. It relies on technology as a fundamental element to enable the transition to renewable energies and bioenergy, to digital grids and smart consumption, and to the transition to smart cities. From eight disciplines or thematic axes, it is intended to promote the transgression of disciplinarity, providing an interdisciplinary research environment, which brings together engineers, economists, lawyers, educators, computer scientists, geologists, journalists and political scientists, in search of contributions for the quality of life of the society of São Paulo and of future generations and with respect to the limited natural resources available on the Planet.
