The integration of distributed energy resources such as electric vehicles (EVs), photovoltaic units (PUs) and battery energy storage systems (BESS) can help with decarbonization. In this context, the development of management strategies for the smart charging of EVs, to encourage the use of available renewable energy, has become a current research area. This scientific initiation project proposes to develop a methodology based on a mathematical model of mixed integer linear programming (MILP) to control the chargers (or charging stations) of the EVs and the operation of the BESS, considering the intermittence of the PUs, with the objective of diversify the source of electrical energy used to charge EVs and, thus, reduce the electricity consumption of the concessionaire. A MILP model has the following benefits: (a) a robust, generic and flexible mathematical model; (b) an efficient computational solution with conventional solvers; and (c) convergence to the optimal solution is guaranteed using classical optimization techniques. The model will be implemented in the mathematical modeling language AMPL and solved using the commercial solver CPLEX.
