Abstract

It is known that the increasing economic activity also increases the demand for electricity, which is not followed by the increasing in supply of electricity (generation, transmission and distribution), creating thus, a gap between consumption and supply. The reduction in this gap requires high resources during relatively long periods of time. In addition, the Brazilian energy matrix, following the global trend, comes progressively incorporating alternative energy sources (wind and photovoltaic), which are inherently intermittent. This scenario push managers to maintain electric system reliable, available and modern. Energy storage can be a short and medium term solution term for these challenges. Energy storage has several applications in electrical systems, bringing a range of benefits such as delaying expansions and upgrades of the transmission and distribution systems, integration of alternative energy sources with the electric grid, reducing losses, the possibility of arbitrage, etc. However, in despite of the benefits listed above, energy storage is not widely used. Thus the main objectives of this research are to identify the main obstacles to spread the use of energy storage in the Brazilian electric grid, as well as the key strategies to be adopted to overcome these obstacles. Therefore, this research will use interviews with experts in the Brazilian electric power sector, such as electric utilities and regulatory agencies. The proposed research will extend methods already applied to previous studies carried out by the applicant on different economic sectors. This research is justified once its results can develop the energy storage business and show a way to improve the efficiency and reliability of the Brazilian power sector giving it more flexibility to deal with the growing demand.
