Abstract

Traditionally, research on Parkinson's disease (PD) focuses on motor and non-motor symptoms outcomes. And although it is closely related to aging, affecting about 1% of all elderly people aged 65 and over, other aspects must be taken into account, such as socioeconomic factors. PD can affect individuals still considered to be young, in the age range between 30 and 50 years, at an incidence of 1.5 to 2.5 / 100,000 person / year, respectively, when the patient is still in the best your life. Thus, although it is a prevalent disease, there is still little known about the economic impact that DP has on society, whether from the perspective of public health managers, professionals involved in the disease, or the patient and your family. This approach is increasingly evident when seeking a better quality of life for individuals through new therapeutic interventions and medications. In general, the costs associated with PD can be classified as direct costs, that is, those intrinsically related to the disease; indirect costs, such as those caused by early retirements and / or loss of productivity, as well as the patient's own expenses with the evolution of the disease, when he or she needs special care and / or changes at home. In this project, we intend to estimate the mean annual cost per patient with PD in a representative sample of tertiary care centers in Brazil. With this information, we believe that it will be possible to plan better strategies for public health management in the context of PD.Key-words: Parkinson's disease, Cost of illness, Health Economics
