Abstract

FAPESP - The São Paulo Research Foundation granted the contract 2014/03085-0 to LACIFID - Laboratory of Ionic Crystals, Thin Films and Dating to carry out "Geochronology of Southeastern Sea Coast of Brazil", a rather extensive project, and the contract 2017/12845-6 to Letícia Mendes de Oliveira to carry out as her masters work and as part of the project, dating shells and sediments from the Sambaqui Santa Marta II near the town of Laguna, state of Santa Catarina. Oliveira's work is to date shells and sediments from the Sambaqui Santa Marta II using TL technique to date sediments and ESR technique to date shells. This proposal is planned to be conducted at the Department of Physics and Chemistry, of the University of Palermo (UNIPA - Palermo/Italy) and it aims to understand the Electronic Spin Resonance (ESR) technique. Dr. Maurizio Leone, full professor of Università degli Studi di Palermo, Dipartimento di Fisica e Chimica and Coordinator of PhD Course on "Technology and Science for Human Health" kindly agreed to receive the student to spend three months at his laboratory to improve students' knowledge in ESR technique. Dr. Leone indicated as tutor of the project the associate professor Maurizio Marrale, a specialist in this area. The student will take samples of shells and sediments from Sambaqui Santa Marta II not only for training but also for the dating of these samples. To confirm the TL results of the sediments will be made ESR measures in Aten Center. All the TL and ESR results of shells and sediments, of each layer of the Sambaqui Santa Marta II will be compared to obtain a chronological age of this archaeological site. (AU)
