Abstract

Within the carboxylate platform, carboxylic acids are seen as important building-blocks for the chemical industry, but their recovery is challenging. In addition to optimized production strains and fermentation processes, an efficient separation of carboxylic acid from the aqueous fermentation broth is indispensable to compete with the current petrochemical production processes. The objective of the present project is related to biotechnological conversion of stillage into byproducts, such as medium chain-length fatty acids (MCFAs), evaluating downstream processes particularly the separation and recovery of the MCFAs. In this context, the liquid-liquid extraction will be evaluated for the recovery of these acids from a fermenter in which a mixed culture is converting biorefinery wastewater to carboxylates. The respective influences of different solvents; dilution and recovery of the MCFAs with high-tech downstream methods will be shown. From this project, the MCFAs production will be combined with fermentation operating procedures and recovery and separation approaches, an effective and applied method for sustainable innovation from lignocellulose waste is expected, enhancing the economics of the biorefinery. The proposed in partnership with renowned Brazilian institution (UFSCar), to be performed at the prestigious University of Wisconsin- Madison, EUA, partnership with Wisconsin Energy Institute, will meet the policy and joint effort of the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry (MCTI) and the Education Ministry (MEC), to promote the consolidation, expansion and internationalization of science and technology, innovation and Brazilian competitiveness through the exchange and international mobility.
