Abstract

The objective of this proposal is to improve the discussions initiated by the PhD research on the interactions of traditional and scientific knowledge in the participatory management of pirarucu (Arapaima gigas) in the region of the Middle Solimões river, Amazonas. Field research pointed to the pragmatic importance that fishers' knowledge reaches in this management process, as they constitute resource management tools. However, conservation policies and sciences do not consider the terms of fishermen's knowledge to be valid, like scientific knowledge. The comparative study of experiences in other countries collaborates with the comprehension of nuances that mark the relationship between traditional communities and apparatuses of the State in deal with nature. Therefore, we propose the study of co-management experiences with indigenous peoples in Canada. The research internship will last one year, supervised by Prof. Mario Blaser, Canada Research Chair in Aboriginal Studies, Memorial University of Newfoundland.
