Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases that affects an increasing number in the world population and that has an interdependence with periodontitis. Periodontal disease is a multifactorial inflammatory disease, caused by the host's immune-inflammatory response to the periodontopathogens present in the subgingival biofilm. An important role of gram-positive bacteria in the evolution of periodontal disease in diabetic patients has been indicated. LTA is the virulence factor of these bacteria, in which, the latest research, indicated it as an endotoxin with greater presence in periodontal pockets of diabetics. Thus, for the analysis of the present study, 40 people will be selected, divided into two distinct groups: 20 diabetic individuals with generalized severe chronic periodontitis and 20 normoglycemic patients with generalized severe chronic periodontitis (control group). Each individual will be clinically evaluated for their periodontal condition, using the clinical insertion level (NIC) as the main parameter. In addition, samples of crevicular gingival fluid will be collected from each participant and, later, analyzes of LTA levels will be made. The value of the cytokines found in the distinct groups will be compared by Student's T or Mann-Whitney test, depending on the normality presented by the Shapiro-Wilk test. It is hoped that the results obtained by the study contribute to a better understanding of the pathogenicity effect of gram positive bacteria in the bidirectional relationship between diabetes mellitus and periodontal disease.
