Abstract

Due to the damages it causes to the population, segregation is an object of interest in several fields of social sciences. However, most of the studies on the area adopt the residential perspective to analyze the phenomenon. This fact has been questioned, since the experiences of individuals are not limited to their place of residence. In this sense, this work presents new ways to evaluate and measure segregation, considering not only the residential space, but also other relevant geographic spaces. We explore alternatives to fill the gaps between the two most common approaches in the area: people-based and place-based. The objective is to develop new methods to analyze segregation that can provide technical foundation for the formulators of public policies responsible for territorial planning and management. (AU)
