Abstract

The main objective of this project is to evaluate key challenges towards the promotion of the integrated coastal management, taking into consideration the regional complex dynamics, and to identify opportunities for an integrated territory within an urban context. Thus, the conditions of the São Paulo coast, comprising only the northern coast and the Baixada Santista, will be used as a case study by applying the principle of environmental policy integration and the concept of institutional interplay. These 12 months of research are part of a two-year post-doctoral project and will focus on the development of a possible multilevel and polycentric governance, both of which are necessary to systematically connect and integrate seemingly incompatible objectives of economic competitiveness, social development and environmental protection and, therefore, guarantee sustainable development. The São Paulo coastline is an interesting case for analysis since, throughout its extension, it covers a wide diversity of ecosystems responsible for the provision of ecosystem services of great environmental, social and economic importance and has been impacted by climate change, mega-projects, population growth, and disorderly coastal occupation.
