Abstract

The topography of the grinding wheel influences mechanical, thermal and chemical conditions in the tool-workpiece interface and, therefore, affects the quality of the ground workpiece significantly. The assessment of the topography through the measurement of grain protrusion allows analyzing the evolution of tool wear and better explaining the results regarding workpiece surface quality. For its measurement, it would be ideal if the grinding wheel were not removed from the machine after grinding and / or dressing. Considering this, the present project aims to find a suitable method to assess its topography. One of them consists in the modeling of part of the grinding wheel surface by a hardenable mass, which will be evaluated under a microscope that allows a three-dimensional analysis of the surface; in the second method, a piece of soft material will be marked by the grinding wheel and evaluated in the same microscope. The results obtained by both methods will be compared with the original topography of the grinding wheel. As a result, the most practical, inexpensive method that provides reliable results in comparison to the original topography should be found.
