Abstract

In recent years several disaster studies have been carried out by different disciplines, using their own methods and concepts (RODRIGUES ET AL, 2015). However, disasters are complex socioenvironmental problems resulted from the interdependence of vulnerabilities and natural hazard events which call for the development of multidisciplinary methods and approaches that can subsidy disaster risk and disaster prevention policies. In the international context, ICSU, ISSC and UNISDR have launched the Integrated Research on Disaster Risk program to foster a multidisciplinary approach to addressing the challenges posed by disasters, mitigating their impacts, and enhancing the mechanisms for formulating public policies. In Brazil, there is still the challenge of knowing how to develop multidisciplinary research methods on the subject. In the face of these challenges, how can we develop multidisciplinary research methods and approaches that can support the formulation of disaster risk and disaster prevention policies in Brazil? How can we develop a methodology to put into action the UN recommendation regarding the building of people-centered and multi-hazards early warning systems (UNISDR, 2005, 2015)? Looking forward to answer these questions, the objective of this research project is to develop a multidisciplinary disaster risk research method to support the formulation of people-centered and multi-hazard warning systems (related to floods, landslides and droughts). The research will be developed in partnership with researchers from Cemaden/MCTIC and the Natural Hazards Center, University of Colorado. (AU)
