Abstract

Bad news can be defined as any information given to a patient or relative that adversely affects the view on the present and the future by changing their expectations. Poor communication can result in various problems not only for the patient and family but also for the doctors and health staff involved. In an attempt to organize the steps and facilitate the procedure was created protocol SPIKES, which is an acronym of the happened to be followed to communicate bad news. Although many studies show its efficiency, SPIKES is still underutilized in hospitals and is not widespread in health education throughout the country. We propose to evaluate the knowledge of medical candidates for medical residency programs at Escola Paulista de Medicina (EPM) on bad news communication, first. In a second moment, we aim to relate demographic and academic data with their respective knowledge about bad news communication; identify the prevalence of courses that offer communication training for bad news; to differentiate knowledge between physicians who have already resided and those who did not; and to differentiate the knowledge of medical candidates for clinical and surgical specialties. In 2016, all physicians eligible for EPM residency programs who attended the trial were invited to participate in the study, where they answered a questionnaire.
