Abstract

We recently found that obese, ad libitum fed, rats and mice present lower mitochondrial Ca2+ uptake capacity in both the brain and liver when compared to lean, calorically-restricted animals. This was the first evidence that a dietary intervention can change mitochondrial Ca2+ transport properties. Ca2+ is a central metabolic regulator and, thus, diet-induced changes in mitochondrial Ca2+ transport may be both physiologically and pathologically relevant in other organs. This proposal aims to uncover possible changes in mitochondrial Ca2+ uptake in heart and skeletal muscle, and study physiological and pathological consequences of possible changes. (AU)
