Abstract

This project proposes the development of hybrid nanocomposites from the combination of Layered Double Hydroxides (LDH) and siloxane-polyether polymer hydrogel cross-linked with urea. The polyethers tested will be poly(ethylene oxide)(PEO) and/or poly(propylene oxide)(PPO) because they form transparent, flexible and insoluble films, so they are ideal for use as drug reservoir. On the other hand, the LDH are inorganic matrices that have excellent drug delivering devices characteristics, given their slow release at gastrointestinal pH (acid medium) due to their alkaline character. The improvement in antibiotic release systems is relevant because these drugs are harmful to the human body at high dosages and/or for an extended period. The proposed material will be synthesized by the sol-gel method and characterized by several physical-chemistry techniques: X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy (Raman-IV), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), among others. The in vitro release profile of Metronidazol (MT) will be investigated by UV-Vis spectrophotometry at pH similar to that of the stomach to determine the concentrations of released drug. (AU)
