Abstract

The purpose of this post-doctoral fellowship is to investigate the relationship between food consumption and iron status with cardio-metabolic risk factors in individuals living in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. This will consider genetic factors associated to the susceptibility of chronic non-communicable diseases, i.e., type 2 diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular diseases. It will be evaluated 864 individuals with e12yo regarding their dietary iron intake (total, heme and non-heme iron), iron status, lipid and glycose control, inflammatory biomarkers, blood pressure, and presence of genetic markers of single nucleotide polymorphism markers that indicate the susceptibility to develop type 2 diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular diseases. Multiple regressions models adjusted for several confounding and control variables will be used to identify the association between iron (heme, non-heme, and total) and iron status with the biomarkers.
