Abstract

Global environmental changes resulting from human activities affect societies in unequal ways, so it becomes imperative to analyze the opportunities and threats of the use of nature from different perspectives. The rapid economic and cultural changes that China underwent in the 20th century led to the current environmental crisis, which is why its leaders want to construct an ecological civilization. Ecological compensation is a promising solution to the problem of integration between conservation and economic development. The present research consists of an analysis of local social institutions involved in ecological compensation arrangements in the special administrative zone of Chongqing, People's Republic of China (PRC). A documentary analysis and interviews with stakeholders, environmental advisory boards and samples of the (peri-urban) provider population and the (urban) beneficiaries may point to the influence of a national political ideology on the behavior of social groups, considering formal and informal institutional dimensions.
