Abstract Considering, first, the studious tension between ictus and word stress in Latin metres, and, second, the theoretic and technical problem of reproducing this tension, both in English and in Portuguese, this research project aims to study Geoffrey Hill's Sapphics in Odi Barbare - his answer to that problem -, and to produce an annotated verse translation of them which keeps the originals' metre and style. Since Hill, following Sir Philip Sydney and Giosuè Carducci as models, reproduces in his Sapphics the Latin ictuses paying close attention to the counterpoint effect brought about by the word stress, we have to follow his method in order to produce a reliable Portuguese translation of these poems. That is why this research project has a first theoretical part, in which we study the Greco-Roman verse-lengths in English and the specific metrical features of Hill's Odi Barbare, and a second practical part, in which we use Hill's method to translate them.
