Facies characterization of Barremian deposits in the Atlantic Ocean

Abstract

The basins of the Eastern and Southeastern Brazilian margin have their origin and evolution related to the Gondwana breakup and the opening of the South Atlantic Ocean. Although the sedimentary record of the pre-rift (Juro-Cretaceous), rift (Eocretaceous), post-rift (Eocretaceous/Aptian) and drift (Eocretaceous/Albian to recent) phases, related to their tectonostratigraphic evolution, have been extensively studied and characterized, the depositional dynamics have not been still completely understood. The "pre-salt" Sergipe-Alagoas and Santos Basins, due to their permoporous characteristics, are recognized as important oil reservoirs. These deposits will be analyzed with a multidisciplinary approach using different stratigraphic tools, in order to increase the environmental knowledge and temporal links of tectonostratigraphic, paleoceanographic and climatic events and to verify the analogy with sections of the same age from the Tethys Basins. Sedimentological, mineralogical, elemental and geochemical analysis will be performed in support of paleomagnetic data. The data will be interpeted and astronomically tuned. An attempt will be made to correlate the basins using the data and the age models obtained. The study of the paleoceanografic and climatic changes will be carried out and correlated between basins to infer global paleoceanografic variations. (AU)
