Abstract

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a complex entity, that affects children, adults and manifests clinically with mucous and bloody diarrhoea. It manifests with two main forms: Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Both forms can be differentiated by macroscopic examination at endoscopy and the final diagnosis is performed by microscopic analysis of biopsies and surgical specimens. There is little information on the pathologic features of IBD in Brazilian adult patients. Objectives: This study aims to analyses the pathological and clinical data of Brazilian adult patients with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis and to access the outcome and therapy response. Methods: A retrospective analysis will be performed on biopsies and surgical specimens from ten patients with Crohn's disease and ten patients with Ulcerative colitis. We will use the criteria of the inflammatory bowel disease European consensus, 2013 for the histopatological analysis. In addition, we will use patients' digital records to assess demographics, symptoms and outcomes. It is expected that with these results we may have a better understanding of the phenotypic characteristics of Brazilian adults with IBD, that still remain a challenging issue in Gastroenterology.
