Abstract

This research seeks to analyze how the vocational training has been given in the School of Social Work of the University of Costa Rica today and its political theoretical direction. Thus, to apprehend this reality is discussed the theoretical directions that influenced the profession throughout the formation - European, American and Marxism. It also discusses the socio-historical and political formation of Costa Rica in order to understand the emergence and insertion of the profession in the country. The methodology is based on secondary sources including bibliographical material and document analysis, from the reading of books, scientific articles and final graduation papers on the subject studied, and also in the collection of empirical data which will be conducted through semi-structured interviews with the coordinator of the course and with two students from different classes that currently comprise the School of Social Work. Moreover, it is important to highlight that this research is part of a broader project that discusses the theoretical trends within the social service in Latin America, through studies conducted in several countries and meetings with the members that compose it. It is hoped, then, through these more expanded studies to understand how these tendencies are manifested in the vocational training of the School of Social Work.
