Abstract

Potato scab is a disease of worldwide occurrence and has become a limiting factor for national potato crop. This disease affects the quality of the tuber because it causes lesions on the surface of the potato which decreases its commercial value or prevents its commercialization. Previous studies have shown that new species of Streptomyces occur in the main regions of Brazil and therefore the survey of the pathogenic species in the country is a key factor for the accomplishment of management measures. Thus, the objective of the present study will be the identification of new species of Streptomyces associated with potato scab by polyphasic taxonomy. The strains will be evaluated through morphological (analysis of spore, hyphae and mycelial structures from growth in different culture media); physiological (growth at different pH values, salinity and temperature conditions); biochemical and molecular characterization using multilocus technique (sequences from the atpD, gyrB, recA, rpoB, trpB and 16S RNAr genes). In addition, an extensive literature review on potato crop and disease will be conducted. With the results of this study, new Streptomyces species associated with potato scab will be correctly described, which will greatly facilitate new studies about the management of the disease. A technical bulletin with information of the disease will be also available to producers and professionals related to this crop. (AU)
