Abstract

Due to their outstanding mechanical and electrical properties, the carbon nanotubes (CNT) are great candidates for the development of coatings for electromagnetic shielding. However, the manipulation and control of individual tubes is impractical, because of their nanosize and sensitivity to electric and magnetic fields. Because of this, CNTs sheets can be prepared to transfer the properties of these nanoparticles to macroscopic structures, called buckypapers (BPs). In this perspective, the present project aims to contribute to the development of electromagnetic shielding materials, through the preparation and characterization of these nanostructures. In the schedule, multiple-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) previously functionalized, through the addition of carboxyl groups, will be dispersed in an aqueous solution, in order to prepare the BPs by vacuum filtration of this mixture. In sequence, BPs/Epoxy composites will be processed via vacuum infiltration with subsequent cure at room temperature. Then, the product will have its structure investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Also, electric conductivity tests will be carried out by means of the 2 and 4 method tips, and characterization in X-band of frequencies (8.2 to 12.4 GHz), measuring the complex parameters of magnetic permeability, electric permittivity, scattering parameters and reflectivity measurements.
