Abstract

Introduction: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is characterized by the sudden reduction of renal function. Data from 2013 released by the World Kidney Day Committee stated that AKI accounts for 20% of hospital mortality and if not treated or diagnosed properly it can progress to chronic kidney disease (CKD). Morus alba, a whiteberry, has shown good results for the protection of the kidneys in nephrotoxic models of AKI. Objective: To evaluate the effect of Morus alba pretreatment in immortalized mouse mesangial cells (MiMC) exposed to cyclosporin A (CsA). Methods: An in vitro analysis of the dose-time-response curve, cell viability and proliferation of MiMC, and the determination of nitric oxide (NO) will be performed. In order to do this, we will assign the cells in the groups: control (CTL), cyclosporin A (CsA), mulberry leaf tea (FLA), fruit tea (FRA), FLA + CsA and FRA + CsA group with protein analysis will be done via Western blotting, with antibodies against nitrotyrosine-3, catalase, IL-10, TNF-±, TGF-² and fibronectin, all standardized by actin. The results will be described as mean ± standard error, with statistical significance for p <0.05.
