Quality of systematic revisions in mammary plastic surgery: an overview of systematic reviews

Abstract

During their history, most procedures in plastic surgery have been determined based on the opinion of specialists. However, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons recommends using a classifying scale of the level of evidence in therapeutic studies, in which systematic reviews remains in the highest level, due to their transparency, adequate methodology, and to being less biased. This type of study provides more reliable and accurate results, and it must be used in the decision-making process. Amongst plastic surgery highest interest subjects, reconstructive and aesthetics mammoplasty stands out. Despite the soaring number of articles regarding these procedures, many do not respect quality standards during their production - and this may lead to inappropriate conclusions. Therefore, the purpose in the present study is to provide a general view of systematic reviews results on breast plastic surgery and to measure their quality through an overview. For these objectives, the studies will be systematically selected and critically analysed independently by two researchers and classified in quality through AMSTAR 2 device. The results will be summarised in an overview so it can gather the best evidence possible, and so this will ease the search for the best alternatives regarding breast plastic surgery, so that the most effective treatment can be available for the patients.
