Family functioning and burden: a study with family caregivers of elderly

Abstract

Chronic no communicable diseases often affect the elderly, who may present decompensations and hospitalizations. Given the high prevalence of these diseases and increased longevity, many older people may have functional limitations and need a caregiver. Nevertheless, family caregivers are not always able to develop the task of caring, which may lead to burden and family dysfunction, variables that may influence the quality of caregiving. Therefore, early identification of these aspects is essential for planning interventions in order to improve the quality of life of these individuals. Objective: Analyzing the association between family functioning and informal caregiver's burden of the elderly in the hospital context. Method: Cross-sectional study based on quantitative research. Informal caregivers of the elderly (n = 120) who are accompanying the elderly in an inpatient unit of a large hospital located in a city in the interior of São Paulo will participate in the study. The sample will be composed of individuals who meet the following criteria: being a family member of the elderly care; be the primary caregiver; not receive compensation for exercising this care; be 18 years of age or older. Exclusion criteria: severe hearing or vision deficits that may make communication difficult. The following instruments will be used: questionnaire to characterize the caregiver and the care context; Zarit Burden Interview; Family APGAR. Descriptive and correlational analyzes will be used. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test will be used to verify the adherence or not to the normal distribution of variables and to define the use of parametric (in case of normality) and nonparametric (in case of non-normality) tests. The significance level for the statistical tests will be p-value d 0.05.
