Abstract

In the year of 1489 the Tratado de Confissom was printed, in the Portuguese city of Chaves, by an unknown author. The work concentrates several preaching used to initiate Christians into the Catholic faith rudiments, starting especially from the mortal sins, the body senses and the ten commandments of God's law. This research aims to analyze the importance given, in this treatise and as well as in other similar ones, to the sins committed orally, known as sins of the tongue, in confrontation with the ways of repentance, correction and instruction which are equally sustained on the explanation upon the oral form, particularly at the time of confession. More precisely, the research aims to map the different types of sins of the tongue and the circumstances in which they commonly occur, seeking to understand standards of conduct accepted or condemned in the 15th century Portuguese society, but which were articulated with values from the past and also diffused in other parts of the Christianity. The referred treatise was regarded as the basis of the study for being one of the fundamental pieces of a process that involved the introduction of the vernacular language as a means of written expression; the statement of writings in the mentioned treatise and stated in social orderliness projects; and the institutionalization and diffusion of ear confession - that had been proposed since the 4th Council of Lateran (1215).
