Abstract

In the middle of the 14th Century, during more regular synods, Iberian archbishops and bishops started debating about the ways diocesan clergymen should encourage the faithful, regarded as rude and ignorant, to take part more actively in the liturgical life of their diocese. In the writings of these moralists, confessors could find several clues on how to learn to be, besides inquirers, masters of men who disdain the most insignificant principles of the Church, especially the commandments and the faith articles. With emphasis, for in proposals set in catechism, synod constitutions and in confession treaties, the present study tends to inquire through which techniques and means the faithful, regarded as incipient, would need to be forced to internalize the rules decided by the cultivated clergymen from Portugal and Castella between the 14th and 16th Centuries. More precisely, giving continuity to my doctorate work structured around the analyses of established decisions for married males in Portugal during this same period, my goal now consists in inventorying the strategies forged so that confessors managed to soften the actions considered vague and not prudent from the Christian faithful, not only from the Portuguese dioceses but also from Castillian territories.
