Abstract

This research project proposes the analysis of data from four cemeteries in Ancient Egypt regarding the role and use of amulets in funerary practices of the non-elite in the New Kingdom sites of Amarna and Gurob and the Third Intermediate Period sites of Matmar and Lahun. The database will consist of information about the amulets and the burials they were deposited and the analysis will focus on building a context around the data with the objective of understanding the role of funerary amulets in that specific context. More specifically, the project proposes a contextual approach to the study of amulets present in burials of non-elite individuals. Furthermore, the aim is to understand what the amulets say about the impact of the political and cultural changes the occurred from the New Kingdom to the Third Intermediate Period on the lower social class of the population that had limited access to certain types of material culture.
