Abstract

Anatomy is a field of knowledge extremely necessary for the development of any therapy, especially surgical; and ventricular geometry acts as an indicator of myocardial function, also acting as a prognostic factor. Human and veterinary cardiology has shown great interest in cardiac morphometric alterations due to remodeling, a phenomenon present in many heart diseases. In dogs, myxomatous degeneration of the mitral valve is the most frequent heart disease, affecting 97% of animals older than 9 years and less than 20 kg. The objectives of this study are to determine in healthy dogs: measurements of left atrioventricular ring and left ventricle; analyze the proportionality between the segments of the left heart chamber of hearts, as well as establish physiological parameters in the morphometric analysis of the heart. For this, 60 hearts will be analyzed, from small animals weighing less than 10 kg (n = 30) and large (n = 30) weighing more than 10 kg. All hearts will be laminated in apical, basal and equatorial segments and submitted to computerized analysis to identify the perimeter values of each segment and the mitral valve ring, wall thickness and distance from the atrioventricular groove to the apex. The variables will be analyzed in order to generate the morphometric profile of healthy hearts in dogs; and may be used as the standard of comparison for geometric assessments of any cardiac conditions.
