Abstract

It is intended to investigate the development of the Greek identity and its colonies that the present project is presented, in order to explore how the forms of contact between Greeks on the Aegean coast and people of the Black Sea region influenced the development of identities expressed in the monetary coinage, in the period corresponding to the Archaic and Classic periods, between the VII-IV centuries a. C. We intend to better understand the cultural articulations coming from such meetings from the analysis of the data recovered in excavations that can be related to the coinage in the cities of Mileto and its colony Sinope, the information contained in the many systematic catalogs of ancient coins preserved in museums and numismatic offices, which were published from the late nineteenth century; as well as analyzes of various authors who studied monetary materials that have been recovered. Although we must consider the biases of the ancient texts, we will incorporate in our analyzes the accounts of Herodotus and Aristotle above all. (AU)
