Abstract

This research aims to investigate the development of the Greek identity expressed in the coin artifacts from the apoikia named Sinope, established by Milesians on the southern coast of the Black Sea. Here we are dedicated to better understanding the cultural articulations arising from the encounters between Greeks and non-Greeks, and the influence of intercultural contacts in the development of identities expressed in the coinage, in the interval corresponding to the Archaic and Classical periods, between the VII-IV centuries BC. We consider that Sínope was a reception environment for different cultures, mainly for the exchange of products. The polis adopts the coinage and delimits the local identity in its coins, and, despite being mainly Greek, it receives external influences and absorbs them in its own way, resulting in a unique set of monetary types in Sinope\'s coinage. Through the analysis of the historical context of Sinope and the monetary types minted in obverse and reverse, we seek to understand the identity expressed by the polis in its coins. (AU)
